Happy Halloween!

The school that I will be student teaching at has this rule where you can't have a Halloween party! However, you can have a fall party!?!? Because our students aren't mixed up enough! This is just another example of political correctness gone too far. Why can't my students enjoy a Halloween party as well as a Christmas part?! But alas that is the rule, and I am just a humble worker bee. This new rule got me thinking about Halloween and its origins. There are a lot of Fundamentalists Christians out there that take censoring Halloween too far. Yes I am a Christian, but I see nothing wrong with dressing you daughter up as a princess and letting her go to a few house to get candy. So I started researching Halloween's origins, and this is what I found. The holiday started out as All Saints Day, celebrated on November first. This day is to celebrate all those who have seen God in Heaven. In the Catholic Church November second is to celebrate those faithful who have died, but not yet been purified and gone to heaven. This is just a glimpse of Halloweens past. The point that I am trying to make is that Halloween doesn't have to be what the world makes it, it is what you make of it. If you don't want your children dressing up as ghosts and goblins, then don't let them. If you don't want you children trick or treating, then don't take them. But don't judge those that do. With that being said I hope all of you have a happy Halloween and keep safe! Happy Haunting Kittens!- anne trowbridge
